March 1, 2001 SUZANNE T. BELLINGHAUSEN Suzanne T. Bellinghausen, 73, was born June 22, 1927 in Leavenworth, KS to Henry and Bertha Theel. She passed away Feb. 13, 2001. As middle child of nine children, she discovered her appreciation for laughter and the human spirit from her family. There she met Paul Dean Lundy and they married on Dec. 24, 1946, Christmas Eve the day they both had off work. In 1948, to try their hand at farm and family, they moved to Harwood. He spent his childhood years and received his education in the Montezuma Community. At the age of 20 years, Dad gave his heart to the Lord, and upon the confession of his faith, was baptized on Jan. 4, 1942, into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. The Church and this faith were precious to him and he was faithful to his vows until the end. Vernon was married to, Marjorie Koehn on Sept. 27, 1942, at Montezuma, KS. They experienced the joys and sorrows of life for over 58 years. Their home was blessed with two sons and four daughters. In March, 1957, during a severe snow blizzard, the serenity of family life was shattered by a gas explosion in home. The family circle started in heaven by the death of the two youngest daughters at that time. We remember Dad being steadfast and consistent, teaching us not only words, but also by example. Church attendance and family devotions were an important part of our family life. Dad loved singing and could sing many humns by memory. He endeavored to fill his place faithfully when he was given church responsibilities. Dad provided well for his family by farming and raising cattle. He enjoyed family outings and seeing new places. His love for people made him many friends. He especially enjoyed the 15 years spent in Missouri from 1970 to 1985, after which we returned to Montezuma. In the recent months, he expressed a desire to go home. His personal testimony was that he was ready. Those left with precious memories are his companion, Marjorie; two sons, Donald and wife, Carol, Walker; Oran and wife, Teresa, Schell City; two daughters, Delores and husband, Merle Koehn, Montezuma, KS and Patricia and husband, Robert Schmidt, Chickasha, OK; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-laws and three sisters-in-laws. HAZEL LORENE BAILEY MOSHER Hazel Lorene Bailey Mosher, 82, was born Dec. 5, 1908 in Stotts City, Mo. to Amanda Josephine Elliott Bailey and George R. Bailey. She passed away Sept. 23, 2001, at Meadowbrook Rehabilitation Hospital in Gardner, KS. Preceding her in death is her husband William Edwin Mosher, six brothers and sisters-William Bailey, John Bailey, George Bailey, Edith Keeling and Cora Theiss and a half sister, Jenny Bitner. Surviving are her three daughters-Donna L. Mosher Harleman, Lillian L. Mosher and Wilma J. Mosher Burnett; eight grandchildren-Donald Ray Harleman, Rita Louis Harleman Ryser, Ronald Earl Harleman, Cheryl Lynn Mosher Cook, Brian James Francis, William Ray Francis, Dr. David James Burnett and Angela Burnett Resch; six great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by all her friends but fondly remembered by everyone who had the privileged to know her. When Hazel was about three years old, her father was killed in a mining accident. Her mother was pregnant with her brother, George, at the time. She soon remarried a man she thought would be a good husband to her and be a good father to her children. This proved to be very wrong. Hazel's older brothers, Bill and John, decided to run away from the abuse and she was sent to Oklahoma to live with an aunt and uncle. She was an unwanted addition and was treated accordingly. Her formal education was very limited since she had to spend most of her time doing household chores and working in the cotton fields. As a young adult, Hazel moved to Schell City to live with another aunt and uncle, Hattie and Charlie McDaniel, her new family proved to be a much improved home for her and she loved them dearly. It was during this period that she met her future husband, William Edwin Mosher. All his friends affectionately knew Edwin as “Pistol”. They were married Dec. 24, 1931, in El Dorado Springs. They lived in the Schell City area where they farmed. They had three daughters-Donna Louise, Lillian Loraine and Wilma June. Hazel was a devoted mother, wife and a fine Christian women. She was always proud to say she never had a babysitter and she was always home waiting when her daughters came home from school. She was eager to stop her work to listen to all the thrilling (and some not so thrilling) stories of her daughters' day. Hazel never met a stranger. She was very proud to tell everyone she met that she was from “Schell City, Missouri, down in Vernon County”. Hazel worked as a cook in the Schell City Public Schools for 15 years. She loved every minute of it. She loved the hundreds of students whose lives she touched and they loved her. (They especially loved her homemade hot rolls and fresh baked cookies). Life was never easy for Hazel. Just at the time when the kids were grown and gone and life should have been a little easier, her husband, Edwin, suffered a stroke. She cared for him in their home for about 10 years until his death on July 7, 1980. Even though life was filled with trials and tribulations, few people, not even her closet friends ever knew of the sorrow and heartbreak that she often felt. She had the ability to put aside the problems of her personal life and approach those around her with a warm heart, open arms and a genuine smile. In the fifth grade, her grandson Brian had to write a poem on the happiest person he had ever known. He wrote about his Grandma Hazel. Hazel loved going shopping with friends. Almost before she hung up her phone, she had both shoes on and one arm already in her coat ready to go. She looked forward to the bus ride with her friends to the Senior Center. There they would have lunch, play cards and have lots of laughs. She also loved going to Kansas City to be with her daughter, Wilma and her two grandsons, Brian and Bill. On one of her trips, they took her to Worlds of Fun where she rode her first roller coaster. Brian had never ridden one and wasn't going to either until his 70-some-year-old grandmother chided him into riding with her. After the ride, they rode again and again. Another highlight was her dream trip of a lifetime to the west coast with four good friends from Schell City. She was thrilled with everything they experienced. Her only regret was that she didn't get to wade in the ocean. She mention this several times so Wilma and grandson Bill hopped aboard a TWA plane and took grandma to Florida so she could wade in the ocean and pick up seashells. For the last several years, she lived with Wilma and her husband, Roger, in Osawatomie, KS. She traveled with them to Canada as well as many, many other places in the United States. Hazel took what the world offered her - loved the good and dealt with the bad. The last two years of Hazel's life were difficult for her family, but not necessarily difficult for Hazel. She was diagnosed with sever dementia. Although she didn't always recognize her family and friends anymore, she relived lots of happy times. When asked about her day, she was always busy-church picnics, cooking meals for family and friends, walks by the creek and lots of other fun things. She also loved animals. Wilma gave her a little black stuffed toy cat. She truly loved the little thing and kept it with her all the time. To her, it was very real. She talked about it being so playful and it even had several litters of kittens. The nurses had to bath it quite frequently because Hazel fed it part of her meals. When God called her home, she died as she had lived. She was a good Christian woman, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a friend to many but, most importantly, she was at peace with herself. She was loved deeply, will be missed truly and never forgotten. Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the Schell City Christian Church in Schell City with Pastor Marvin Jamison officiating. Musical selections were provided by Anna Mae Hillsman and Diane Eslinger. Pallbearers were Neal Gerster, Brian Francis, Bill Francis, Donald Harleman, Ronald Harleman and Steve Resch. Burial was in the Green Lawn Cemetery in Schell City, under the direction of the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home in Schell City. WITHEM Kenneth was blessed with a very large immediate and extended family of 22 brothers and sisters. They have maintained their strong sense of family through the years by attending regular family reunions. Ken loved those opportunities to visit, laugh and catch up on family news. He enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, listening to vintage country music and traveling. Ken began his lifelong love of cars and working with machinery in adolesence. He went on to be an auto mechanic in the U.S. Marine Corps and served on Guan, Okinawa and China during WWII. He was never a man to complain about the bumps in the road. He just calmly drove over them and drove on. He wasnt a man to gossip or belittle others. He was not a person to ever raise his voice in anger at another person. One of the luckiest days of his life was June 25, 1957, when he married the woman he had fallen in love with, Viola. Vi had two small daughters, Lousie and Sandy. From the moment they were married, he also had two daughters. This week those two daughters are saying goodbye to the best father imaginable. They feel truly blessed with his love, his sense of humor and his goodness. He is, and always will be their definition of a good man. Ken had a marvelous sense of humor that remained with him through his final days. Often during his hospitalization, his humor cheered up those who came to cheer him up. On Dec. 23, 1934 he was baptized at Logan Christian Church in Logan, Iowa. On Aug. 9, 2000 he went home to be with the Lord. MATTHEW BENJAMIN GAINES Matthew Benjamin Gaines, 17, the son of David Keith and Carol Ruth (Vacca) Gaines was born Feb. 24, 1984, in Nevada and passed from this life on Thursday, March 22, 2001, at the Nevada Regional Medical Center in Nevada. Matt, who was currently a junior at Northeast Vernon County High School lived his entire life in Schell City and was always known for his warm, friendly and upbeat personality. Matt was also a lifelong Christian, growing up in the Schell City Christian Church before moving to the Park Street Christian Church in El Dorado Springs where he became active in their youth program. He was baptized there in January 1997. Recently he had been attending the Horton Methodist Church where his maternal grandparents are members. Matt loved sports of all kinds, enjoyed video hames, the Beatles, contemporary Christian music and putting models together. Matt was also a past member of the Schell City 4-H Club. Just over a year ago he began driving--a 1984 Mercury Marquis, a car made the same year he was born. But the highlight of Matt's life came last year when the "Make-A-Wish" Foundation granted his wish for him and his family to travel to Alabama to the Talladega Speedway for the Nascar Finals.
