BERLIN FAMILY

J. N. Berlin, Early Settler, Died Last Friday.

John Nicholas Hine Berlin, one of El Dorado Springs' best known citizens, and one of the three remaining Civil War veterans in this city, died at his home 210 Hightower street, early last Friday morning. Mr. Berlin, who had reached an advanced age, had been in declining health for several years, but had been seriously ill only for about two months.

He was one of the early pioneer residents of this vicinity and settled on a farm near here before El Dorado Springs was founded. Prior to that time he had lived at Schell City and Nevada.

During the Civil War Mr. Berlin enlisted as a private in the Union army, being a member of Co. G, 172d Regiment, Ohio Infantry, and served through that great conflict. After his discharge from the army, in 1865, he was married to Harriett Heskitt, and to this union was born a daughter, who died in infancy. The wife and mother passed away in 1881.

On March 3, 1887, he was married to Martha Laura Cock, who survives. Besides his wife, he is survived by two brothers, two sisters, and a half-sister as follows: George C. Berlin, Westmorland, Calif.; Soloman J. Berlin, Oxford, Colo.; Susan B. Raine, Ironton, Ohio; Mary B. Cummings, Boise, Idaho; and Myrtie M. Bell, Philadelphia, Pa. There are also a number of surviving nieces and nephews and other relatives.

As a child Mr. Berlin was brought up in the Presbyterian faith, but about fifty years ago he united with the El Dorado Springs First Baptist church.

Mr. Berlin was one of our most progressive citizens and was always keenly interested in the welfare of his home town. Living here when the town was founded. he experienced the pleasure of watching it grow and develop into the modern little city of the present; and as evidencing his confidence in its future, throughout the years he invested heavily in real estate, and was probably the most extensive owner of El Dorado Springs residence property of any of our citizens.

Funeral services were held at the Nafus funeral home Saturday afternoon, August 22, at 2:30 o'clock and were conducted by. E. W. Chewning, pastor of El Dorado Springs First Baptist church. Burial was in the El Dorado Springs cemetery.
