Welcome to the new Cedar County, Missouri GenWeb Project Website!

All research resources are listed alphabetically by category at the Resources link (top and bottom of each page).

Free genealogy websites that were previously at Rootsweb.com were shut down by Ancestry.com to "update for security reasons." Unfortunately, after the free sites were shut down for many, many months (presumably to also push researchers to paid sites), volunteers who had created some of the county GenWeb sites eventually lost their website and their work. There are now several Missouri counties that need a volunteer to update and keep them available as a source of free information. Maintaining a county website is relatively easy (even I can do it), and there are people to help you. Check out the list of Missouri counties that are available for "adoption" at MOGenWeb. All researchers looking for free information will appreciate your work!

Please email information and/or photos of your Cedar Co ancestors to be uploaded to the site (no pictures or information on living persons, please). Recommendations regarding the website and the kinds of information that would be helpful in your research will be appreciated. The Cedar Co research community appreciates the items which were previously provided to the county coordinator. If you previously submitted a Family Group Sheet or the Surname you research, please check these projects on the Resources page to ensure the information is now linked and properly listed. Check the Biographies link on the Resources page for ideas, and submit information about early settlers you have researched. Thank you.

This site contains what you need to know to research your Cedar County, Missouri ancestors and includes free information for your personal research. Please email the County Coordinator (email at bottom of each page) if you have a "how-to" research question that is not covered or if you encounter a broken link.

PLEASE USE THIS INFORMATION IN YOUR PERSONAL FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH, BUT DO NOT COPY INFORMATION FROM THIS SITE AND PUBLISH ELSEWHERE ON THE INTERNET, POST ON OTHER WEBSITES, OR IN BLOGS ~ THANK YOU!

DNA Project:  Have you taken a DNA test? You can compare your autosomal test results with those who tested at different companies by uploading your test data to https://gedmatch.com/, free of charge. Several comparison tools are free and some advanced features require a small monthly fee. If you tested at Ancestry.com, you can download your test data and upload it to familytreeDNA.com, MyHeritage.com, and GEDmatch.com without re-testing. Transferring your results will help you and other researchers get more from testing. To learn more about genetic genealogy, see information at each company's website and also https://isogg.org/. Sign up to receive periodic emails regarding DNA testing and research from https://dna-explained.com/ and https://blog.kittycooper.com/. Many videos are also available on utube.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cedar County was organized February 14, 1845, from St. Clair County on the north and Dade County on the south. With all of the counties in the surrounding areas being named for prominent state or national figures, one might wonder why a county would be named for a creek which had received its name for the evergreen trees which  grew in abundance nearby. The theory has been advanced that the name Cedar carried no controversial issue in the political history of the country, and thus was agreeable to all concerned. The original county seat was called Lancaster. In 1847 the name was changed to Fremont, in honor of the "Pathfinder," but in 1856 Gen. Fremont became the Republican candidate for President, and the following winter the Democratic Legislature changed the name to Stockton, in honor of Commodore Richard Stockton of the navy who had arrested Fremont during the Mexican War and sought to have him disgraced.
