MRS. ELLA JULIA (MONTGOMERY) EDDY

MRS. ELLA EDDY DIED WHEN FIRE DESTROYED HER HOME WEDNESDAY MORNING

The city fire siren sounded an alarm of fire at ten twenty Wednesday morning. It was a call for help to the home of Mrs. Ella Eddy near the Sac River bridge east of town--very near the old Alex C. Montgomery farm house where George T. Montgomery and wife now live.

Smoke was first seen by Verne Lean who was calling at the Montgomery home. He summoned the aid of Hardy Dixon, a neighbor and Larkin Simmons who was at Dixon's home. Dixon went into the building and found one room locked from the inside which led him to believe that Mrs. Eddy had not left her room. Breaking into the room flames were furious and no one dared enter it.

The building was completely destroyed. Water was thrown on the ruins to cool it more rapidly so a search could be made to ascertain whether a body could be found. Late in the afternoon the body was found and was taken in charge by Melvin R. Church.

At first relatives and friends were hoping that she had gone for a walk which she had been doing frequently for years when her health would permit. She regularly met the mail carriers when she was able.

Ella Eddy was a daughter of the late A. C. Montgomery and wife and was born in Cedar county 76 years ago and with the exception of a few years had spent her life here. She was married to Dr Eddy fifty years ago while he was in this county building the several wire cable bridges. After their marriage they lived at Warsaw, Benton county for several years.

She is survived by George T. Montgomery who lived in the old family home and Dr J. W. Montgomery of El Dorado Springs and two nephews A. Clark Montgomery of Stockton and Clyde T. Montgomery of R1 Dunnegan.

It seems probable that Mrs. Eddy had tried to escape because the body was found a number of feet away from that part of the building in which she spent most of her time.

     Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Dr. Montgomery's Sister Lost Life in Fire

Mrs. Ella Eddy, 76 years old, lost her life in a fire which destroyed her home near the Sac river bridge, east of Stockton, Wednesday morning, Dec. 17.

The fire was first discovered by neighbors, but by the time the Stockton fire truck and other help arrived, the entire home was in flames, and it soon became evident that Mrs. Eddy was trapped in her room, which was locked, and failed to escape. The body was found in the ruins late in the afternoon of that day and sent to a Stockton funeral home. The home was completely destroyed.

Mrs. Eddy was the daughter of the late A. C. Montgomery and wife, Cedar county pioneers, and with the exception of a few years spent her life near Stockton. She was married to Dr. Eddy fifty years ago while he was in the county building several wire cable bridges, and they later lived at various points, including Warsaw, Mo.

She is survived by two brothers, Dr. J. W. Montgomery, of El Dorado Springs, and by George T. Montgomery of east of Stockton, who lives only a short distance from where she lost her life.
