Long-time genealogist and volunteer coordinator of the Cedar County, Missouri GenWeb site, Kay Snow, passed away in November 2024. Her tireless work over many years to help make more information available to researchers is to be commended. We thank Kay for her years of dedication to family history research, Cedar County research, and the MOGenWeb Project.

Your new County Coordinator has updated the website. Every effort has been made to transfer user-submitted content to this new site and give credit where that information is available. Proper credit for information and/or pictures submitted years ago is simply not possible in all instances due to the limited information that was available from the old site. Gravestone photos, many with a copyright statement obliterating the picture, will not be uploaded. Please email information and/or photos of your Cedar Co ancestors that can be uploaded to the site (no pictures or information on living persons, please). Recommendations regarding the website and the kinds of information that would be helpful in your research will be appreciated. The Cedar Co research community is appreciate of the items which were previously provided to the county coordinator. If you previously submitted a Family Group Sheet or the Surname you research, please check these projects on the Resources page (link at the top and bottom of each page) to ensure the information is now linked and properly listed. Please check the Biographies link on the Resources page for ideas and submit information about early settlers who you have researched. Thank you.

This site contains what you need to know to research your Cedar County, Missouri ancestors and includes free information for your personal research. Please email the County Coordinator (email at bottom of each page) if you have a "how-to" research question that is not covered or if you encounter a broken link.

PLEASE USE THIS INFORMATION IN YOUR PERSONAL FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH, BUT DO NOT COPY INFORMATION FROM THIS SITE AND PUBLISH ELSEWHERE ON THE INTERNET, POST ON OTHER WEBSITES, OR IN BLOGS ~ THANK YOU!

Frequently Asked Questions

Cedar County was organized February 14, 1845, from St. Clair County on the north and Dade County on the south. With all of the counties in the surrounding areas being named for prominent state or national figures, one might wonder why a county would be named for a creek which had received its name for the evergreen trees which  grew in abundance nearby. The theory has been advanced that the name Cedar carried no controversial issue in the political history of the country, and thus was agreeable to all concerned. The original county seat was called Lancaster. In 1847 the name was changed to Fremont, in honor of the "Pathfinder," but in 1856 Gen. Fremont became the Republican candidate for President, and the following winter the Democratic Legislature changed the name to Stockton, in honor of Commodore Richard Stockton of the navy who had arrested Fremont during the Mexican War and sought to have him disgraced.
